Contemporary Dance evolved from a rebellion against the restraints of Classical Ballet. In contrast to the strictness of style required by Classical Ballet technique, Contemporary Dance principles veer away from set form and make use of contraction, release, suspension, off-balance, spiral, tilt and breath. A Contemporary technique class may make use of both floor and standing work, as well as more experimental and fluid movements.
Students on Chantry's Contemporary Dance Associate Programme are taught to develop an understanding of established codified modern-dance techniques (such as Graham, Limon and Cunningham), fusion and release styles. They also develop creative and improvisation skills, and learn repertoire from major 20th and 21st century contemporary works. |
